Ubislate 7ciUPDATE – According to the Datawind website, all Christmas Pre-stock is sold out! Any further orders placed will be received after Christmas.

In the highly competitive tablet market which is filled with pricey devices, it is nice to know that there is an affordable tablet which undercuts even the lowest priced tablets on the market and is infamously known as the “world’s cheapest tablet.”

Datawind just announced that it released the UbiSlate 7Ci tablet PC on the UK market. The tablet was initially developed by Srinagar-based Datawind to be used in educational establishments in India.  It was released in India in September of 2013 however, its popularity and success have propelled it into the consumer market.

Back in 2011 Datawind surprised the tablet PC market with an Android tablet known as the Akash which was made available to schools in India for an astonishing price of $22.00.  The project was aimed at providing access to an Internet-capable device for more than 200 million students in addition to teachers throughout the schools in India.

The project was backed by the Indian government and focused on offering e-learning as well as improving the quality of education for students in India.  Due to the fact the Internet is widely used for completing research projects and other learning tasks, Datawind viewed the Akash project as an opportunity to improve literacy as well as the quality of education as a whole.

The UbiSlate 7Ci is a commercial version of the Akash tablet device that originates from the India project. It is part of a lineup of affordable Datawind tablet PCs running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and is commonly referred to as a Mobile Internet Device and Multimedia Computer as stated on the box.

Upon release in the UK market, he UbiSlate 7Ci is priced at just $29.99 and is an entry-level Datawind device, with the UbiSlate 7C+ and 7CZ providing improved specifications for a price increase. Many media outlets speculate what will happen when Datawind continues to release upgraded models with quad-core processors at a price under $72.00. Many assume this project is in the works as the result of an announcement by the company CEO at the Wired 2013 conference.

What is the Buzz All About?

For the incredibly low price tag, the UbiSlate 7Ci offers an 800 x 400 pixel 7-inch Thin Film Transistor (TFT) LCD capacitive touchscreen with G-Sensor that provides automatic screen alignment according to the orientation. Additionally, the UbiSlate 7Ci offers 512MB of RAM with a 1GHz Cortex A8 processor. There is also 4GB of built-in storage which can be increased up to 32GB using a microSD card.

The UbiSlate 7Ci runs on the Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system and is a leap forward from the Gingerbread OS which came with the Akash tablet PCs. The 1GHz Cortex A8 processor is very similar to the first generation iPad which was released in 2010, as well as various tablet PCs which were released on the market during 2011 and sold in the price range of $72.00. The UbiSlate 7Ci also runs on the same Android operating system for that year.

Additional features include a front facing VGA camera with 0.3 megapixel resolution and Digital Zoom which is located on the top right hand side of the display in the front of the device. This allows the UbiSlate 7Ci to be used for making video calls. The back facing camera is absent on the device to help control the price.

Also included in the UbiSlate 7Ci is a convenient multi-format video player that allows for viewing of a variety of videos with different file extensions.  You can also easily listen to music using the Multi Format Music Player and the back facing device speaker. Or, you can opt to use headphones via the 3.5mm audio jack.

The UbiSlate 7Ci offers Wi-Fi connectivity plus, it has the capability to allow users to transfer files to and from the tablet via the mini USB port. The microUSB port is located on the left side of the Power button along with a 2.5mm charging pin slot.

The UbiSlate 7Ci is powered by a 3,000 mAh Li-Pol battery that offers a life of up to 3 to 3.5 hours on a full charge. The contents included in the box cover the basic essentials and include an AC Adapter in the 200 to 240 volt range and a microUSB port cable and USB OTG cable.  The UbiSlate 7Ci also comes with a one year warranty.

In terms of software, the UbiSlate 7Ci has an Office productivity suite preinstalled along with a selection of apps for productivity, education, gaming, and entertainment, as well as access to the Google Play store. Since the UbiSlate 7Ci was originally geared toward literacy and education, it has preinstalled apps such as TestBag which is a comprehensive e-assessment and testing solution and the Intelligaia finger tracing app which teaches the alphabet.

Users also have access to more than 150,000 apps according to Datawind with the capability to handle basic functions such as email, instant messaging, social networking services, and web browsing with no access to SMS or MMS. The UbiSlate 7Ci can be used for other activities such as a dedicated remote control for your Squeezbox, Sonos, or XBMC multiroom system.

Ubislate on facebookWhy Are UK Residents Flocking to the UbiSlate 7Ci?

Although it is easy for some people to obtain more capable tablet devices for over $72.00 which provide an improved tablet PC experience, not everyone can afford to spare the extra money for an upgraded tablet PC.  This is why the UbiSlate is aimed at a specific target audience that has difficulty affording some of the higher grade tablet PCs on the market.

The UK media is excited about the release of the UbiSlate 7Ci since it provides a decent device for basic web browsing and e-reading and gets the job done for a variety of other tasks. The UbiSlate is also ideal for very young children or users which plan to use the device for travel or on occasion. At a very affordable $29.99, the UbiSlate 7Ci also serves as a functional leisure activity device or for those that want to explore without having to worry about device damage.

Although everyone knows it is ideally better to invest more in an upgraded Android tablet, it is still great to know that there are options on the horizon for all different types of budgets. This means no one is excluded from the benefits of Internet connectivity, learning, and productivity.

There is clearly a huge demand in the UK for affordable Android tablet PCs. Tesco, a major retailer in the UK, recently reported it has sold 300,00 Hudl tablets at $119. According the research company CCS Insight, 8.3 million tablet PCs were sold in the UK with more than half of the sales occurring during the last three months of 2012. The British catalog retailer Argos sold over one million tablets during 2012 as well.  Additionally, just under 6 million tablet PCs were sold in the UK during the first quarter of 2013 with a marked increase in demand during the holiday season.

Datawind’s Mission

Suneet Singh Tuli, CEO at Datawind UbiSlate, initially announced Datawind would be introducing the UbiSlate 7Ci tablet to the UK at the Wired 2013 event in October. Tubli also mentioned Datawind’s intention to significantly ‘disrupt’ the tablet market by introducing new low cost devices to the market that will provide significant competition for higher end Android and Apple devices. Tuli revealed that Datawind is currently working on a new tablet PC that will offer a processor equivalent to the Apple iPad 4.

According to Suneet Singh Tuli, “With recent figures showing that in the UK, 29 percent of the poorest households have no computer and 36 percent no internet, we’re working to bring affordable technology to the many hundreds of thousands of households excluded from benefiting from the digital revolution. The development of the tablet stemmed from the realization that lack of internet adoption in many parts of the world was primarily because of lack of affordability. Our aim is to bridge the gap by offering cost-effective, high-specification devices and internet access that offer excellent value to all.”

Datawind also announced in November of 2013 it is working with World Vision to supply the UbiSlate 7Ci to Niger and Rwanda for field testing with a roll out to more African countries to follow.  The partnership is an effort to reach children and families, in addition to making significant improvements in healthcare and education. Datawind has offices in Srinagar, UK; Montreal and Mississauga, Canada, Dallas, USA, Amritsar and New Delhi, India.

HL-3140CW main

If you are looking for a laser printer with speedy performance which offers durability and support for mobile device printing in addition to other features, it may be worthwhile to take a look at the Brother HL-3140CW LED printer.

Overview.

The new Brother HL-3140CW LED printer offers high performance, simplicity, and versatility which is bundled into a durable casing.  Although this model of the Brother printer is similar to a laser printer, the main difference is the device uses LED technology as opposed to a laser to create an image of each page.

The Brother HL-3140CW is designed more for a small business office environment than it is for a home office.  This is mainly due to the hefty size and durable build at 9.5 x 16.1 x 18.3 inches (HWD) which is rather large for a laser printer.  It also weighs in at just over 37 pounds and offers a generous input capacity capable of handling up to 250 sheets of paper. If you choose to use it in your home office, be prepared to reserve counter space or purchase a solid printer stand to leave space on your desk for work tasks.

Features and Design.

If style is not a priority, then you will like the simple and durable design of the Brother HL-3140CW which is comprised of a two-tone unit that resembles a simple square box.  The printer is completely void of any high tech type of design but is still great for getting the job done.

Equipped with Wi-Fi Direct, the Brother 3140CW allows you to easily connect mobile devices plus, you are not limited to printer placement in your office environment. Wi-Fi Direct is a wireless protocol which allows you to print from most mobile devices and laptop PCs without requiring any device to connect to a transitional Wi-Fi network.

It is also important to mention that the 3140CW is not equipped with an Ethernet jack so you are limited to wireless connectivity.  However, if you are accustomed to working with a wireless connection, this should not be an issue.

Additionally, you can connect your PC to the Brother 3140CW using the USB 2.0 port located on the side of the unit.  This requires a purchase of a standard USB cable to establish connectivity.  Other features include:

  • LED Technology:  Instead of using laser to create an image on paper, the Brother HL-3140CW uses LED technology which emulates a laser and results in more cost effective printing results.
  • Connectivity:  In addition to the Wi-Fi Direct technology, the Brother HL-3140CW fully supports 802.11b/g/n wireless connectivity.  This ensures the printer can be used with as variety of Wi-Fi protocols and standards.  Wireless networking also provides you with access to cloud support and other compatible features such as AirPrint, Google Cloud Print, the Brother iPrint and Scan app, and Cortado Workplace which enhance smartphone and mobile device connectivity.
  • Input Tray and Manual Feed:  The Brother HL-3140CW is equipped with a 250-sheet input cassette tray which pulls out from the bottom of the unit along with a manual feed located above the cassette which supports one page at a time.  The input feeds are notorious for lasting a long time which allows you to maximize the LED technology. Additionally, the durable paper output bed on the top of the unit is capable of accommodating up to 100 sheets of paper before paper removal is required.  The output bed also helps to prevent paper damage and paper jams which may otherwise occur in a printing device which has the output tray protruding from the front of the unit.
  • Printing Speed:  Tests have shown that the Brother HL-3140CW meets its claims in terms of printing speed which is approximately 18 pages in just under one minute with a maximum resolution of 600 x 2400 dpi (dots per inch).  Additionally, the printer is designed to handle high volume color which produces a pretty decent printing result.  The only drawback is the Brother HL-3140CW is not equipped with auto-duplexing technology which allows you to print on both sides of the paper.
  • Basic Control Panel:  The Control Panel located on the top of the unit is very basic and easy to use. There is an LED screen without touchscreen functionality which allows you to easily see commands and functions as well as four navigation keys, a Print button, and a Cancel button.
  • Easy Setup:  Setting up the Brother HL-3140CW is relatively easy if you have a wireless router which is equipped with Wi-Fi Protected Setup.  Otherwise, it is necessary to browse through the list on the LED screen in order to enter your password and perform the configuration. Additionally, the installation guide is very straightforward and complete with illustrations.
  • Toner Cartridges:  When you purchase the Brother HL-3140CW, it has 4 toner cartridges included which support up to 1000 pages each.  The cartridges offer the standard CMYK colors of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black.  When it comes time to replace the cartridges, they are available in two different sizes which include one which supports 1400 pages and another which supports up to 2200 pages at a price of approximately $70 and $78 respectively.  When you replace the black cartridge the cost is approximately $82 with support for up to 2500 pages.

The above pricing for replacement cartridges results in just over 3 cents per page for a black cartridge and about 18 cents per page for a color cartridge.  You can offset this cost by using higher-yield cartridge which will bring the cost per page down by approximately 3 cents.  Additionally, when you reach over 15,000 pages, it is important to mention that the print drum will require replacement at a cost of approximately $150.

  • Sleep Mode:  The Brother HL-3140CW LED printer offers a Deep Sleep Mode energy saving feature which activates when the printer is not in use.  The Sleep Mode feature uses less than 1 watt of power when activated.
  • Function Lock:  The Secure Function Lock feature on the Brother HL-3140CW allows you to place limitations on specific functions for each user.  This helps to increase the life of the printer, in addition to reducing the amount of toner and paper consumption which can result from unnecessary printing tasks.
  • Auto-Off Mode: This feature allows you to configure the printer to automatically power-off when not in use which helps to reduce energy consumption.
  • Memory:  In terms of memory, the Brother HL-3140CW is about average at 64MB which is slightly less than other printers of this caliber on the market.
  • Hardware:  The printer processor offers 333MHz which enhances the speed and capability for large printing projects with digital color LED printing technology.  The Brother HL-3140CW is also equipped with GDI (Graphics Device Interface) emulation which increases accuracy when printing from a broad range of devices.
  • Paper Types:  The Brother HL-3140CW is capable of handling a variety of different types of paper including plain paper, bonded paper, recycled paper glossy paper, labels, and envelopes.

In terms of compatibility, the Brother HL-3140CW LED printer is compatible all versions of the Windows operating system from Vista to XP, Windows 7, and Windows 8.  You can also use the printer with Server 2003, 2003 x64 Edition, server 2008, and Mac 10.6.8, 10.7.x, and 10.8.x.

What are the Pros and Cons?

Overall, the Brother HL-3140CW can provide a small business with a competent and durable device capable of outlasting other printers of this caliber.  However, to help you make an informed decision here are a few pros and cons:

Pros

  • Durable and sturdy build can withstand large printing jobs and extends the life of the printer.
  • Extremely fast Wi-Fi with Wi-Fi Direct provides for superior connectivity to mobile devices.
  • Versatile printing with mobile devices is easy thanks to compatibility with AirPrint, Google Cloud Print, and the free Brother iPrint and Scan app.
  • Printer has strong Wi-Fi connectivity and is capable of printing efficiently even if the device is located in another room.
  • Fast printing speed makes larger printing jobs a breeze.
  • Efficient and reliable paper handling prevents you from wasting time dealing with

 paper jams.

  • Relatively easy setup and configuration.
  • Energy and power saving features.
  • LED technology helps to reduce the cost of the printer while increasing printing efficiency.
  • Ability to offer large-sized printing loads without sacrificing the life of the unit.
  • Decent print quality for the price which is in the ballpark of $150.

Cons

  • Printer is not equipped with auto-duplexing which makes the Brother HL-3170 the better buy if you require this feature.
  • 64MB of RAM is adequate however, if you require higher performance the HL-3170 with 128MB will sufficiently meet your needs.
  • Lack of an Ethernet port for a wired connection.
  • Color consumables can be a costly proposition.
  • Does not produce high print quality if your goal is to print photos.

What’s in the Box?

When you purchase the Brother HL-3140CW, you receive the printer unit, one set of toner cartridges capable of handling up to 1000 pages each, the drum unit set which handles up to 15,000 pages, CD-ROM which assists with installing printer drivers, and a Quick Start guide.

Conclusion.

The Brother HL-3140CW is a speedy, reliable, and capable printer which will outlast other printers of this caliber in terms of durability.  If you require features which are not included in the HL-3140, then we recommend upgrading to the HL-3170 which offers Ethernet, auto-duplexing, and other additional features.  On the other hand, if you are looking for a printer which produces relatively decent print quality, reliable paper handling, and fast printing speed with easy printing from mobile devices, the Brother HL3140CW LED printer may be just what you need.

iPad Air black and white

The latest addition to the line of full-sized Apple iPads is the iPad Air.  The new iPad Air has undergone a significant redesign with a range of features which are certain to appeal to iPad enthusiasts.

The new iPad Air lives up to its name with a lighter build and thinner design which complements the new curved sides.  This makes it a cakewalk to hold in your hands for extended periods of time.  Weighing in at one pound, the iPad Air inherits some of the design from the iPad mini and has retained the sturdy aluminum casing from its predecessors.

Whenever Apple releases an iPad upgrade, there are features which are obvious and stand out and others that are a subtle refinement.  Regardless, when you start using the new iPad Air it is hard not to notice the new improvements which are immediately tangible.

Product Overview: What is the iPad Air and What Is Different from the Previous Generation?
The iPad Air is the newest 10-inch tablet PC in the line of iPad tablets except in a new and lighter design that you can hold in one hand.  It is the fifth generation iPad, despite the fact that it is not referred to as the iPad 5 and instead is called the iPad Air.

Size.

One of the primary differences between the iPad Air and its predecessors is a narrower bezel where the previous generation iPads have larger and roomier bezels. Regardless, the new svelte design carries over to the back of the device with sturdy aluminum casing. The stereo speakers located on the bottom of the device with a lightning port located in between the speakers.

The thickness of the iPad Air is greatly reduced when compared to the iPad 4, and there is a difference in weight of 1.5 pounds for the iPad 4 to 1 pound for the iPad Air.

The iPad Air is slightly smaller than the iPad 4 due to the difference in the bezel size.  This does not mean that Apple has cut back in quality and you still have access to all of the features you loved in the iPad 4 including the high-end glass on the front and sturdy aluminum casing.  Additionally, the lighter iPad Air is designed to compete with some of the other lighter weight tablet PCs on the market.

Controls.

The controls are still located exactly where you expect them to be. The volume controls are basically the same as the iPad Air predecessors with a slider that controls the screen rotation lock or silent mode. The power button is still located on the top of the device.  The 2.5 mm combo audio jack is also located on the same side as the power button.

Camera.

The camera is still located on the back and is an improved 5 megapixel camera with a 1.2 megapixel front facing camera located in its typical position above the display.

iPad AirWhat Are the Specifications?

The iPad Air runs on iOS 7 which is the same operating system you would expect from the iPhone 5S and 5C and is Apple’s latest operating system.  The iPad Air also runs on an A7 dual-core 1.3GHz Central Processing Unit (CPU) with 1GB DDR3 Random Access Memory (RAM) which provides for an extremely fast response time and seamless performance.

The A7 CPU did very well in benchmark tests and proved to match up to competing quad core tablet devices currently on the market.  Plus, the iPad Air is equipped with power quad-core graphics which complements the powerful performance.

  • 64-Bit Capability: Programs launch very quickly as the result of the 64-bit next generation A7 CPU.  Currently, there is not an abundance of 64-bit software available however, the 64-bit capability will allow application developers to address more Random Access Memory (RAM) in the future. In the meantime, iOS typically does not consume a lot of RAM since the operating system is very streamlined.
  • Improved JavaScript: JavaScript functionality has significantly improved over previous iPad devices running at 380.7 milliseconds which renders extremely fast JavaScript inside a web browser.
  • Software: In terms of the software, in addition to iOS7, you also have free access to the iWork productivity suite which includes Pages and Keynote and iLike Suite.  This software is available as free download which means you also get Garage Band, iPhoto, and iMovie. You also have access to the wide selections of apps which are available in the App Store with more coming out on a frequent basis.

The main app toolbar is still included with the iBook app which provides a sharp display for reading eBooks.  Web browsing is fast and reliable with excellent rendering and support for HTML5 video instead of Adobe Flash Player. Additionally, the App selection including Amazon instant video for Prime and non-Prime members and a larger selection of apps and games in general is a prime selling point for the iPad Air.

  • Cameras: The back facing 5 Megapixel camera has been improved with sensors that offer a larger pixel size, HDR On/Off mode, Simple UI, and camera switching option with shutter button in the middle of the controls along with tap to focus on the screen.  You can also easily switch from photo mode to 1080p video and square photo mode within the control set.

The rear camera also has auto focus, face detection, backside illumination, and a 5 element lens, the new standard prime f2.4 aperture which has a wide range and is efficient at letting in low light.

The front camera has also been improved with 1.2 megapixels for photo and 720p for video.  The larger pixels mean more light which provides better visibility when using FaceTime or Skype.  The front camera also has face detection and backside illuminated sensors as well.  Geotagging is optional on the iPad Air which allows you choose whether you want to activate or deactivate it.

  • Display: The iPad Air has a 9.7-inch diagonal LED-backlit Multi-Touch Retina display with IPS technology and a resolution of 2048 x 1536 with 264 ppi (pixels per square inch) which provides for a sharper and more color accurate display.  The color accuracy is very sharp and enhanced by the glossy display. The viewing angle has improved and is very generous when you move it around without any color distortion or dark spots.
  • Connectivity: The iPad Air comes with LTE 4Gn WiFi with 3G option and a WiFi only version. The tablet is equipped with WiFi 802.11 b/g/n/ dual band with Nemo.  There is no capability for 802.11ac connectivity which is the new and upcoming WiFi standard.  Additionally, there is Bluetooth 4.0 and, if you choose one of the LTE 4G and 3G versions, there is a GPS included. Otherwise, you get WiFi triangulation with the WiFi only model.
  • Device Dimensions: Tablet is 0.29 inches thick with a height of 9.4 inches and a width of 6.6 inches.  The WiFi only version weighs in at just one pound and the WiFi + Cellular version weighs in at 1.05 pounds.
  • Battery: Battery life hasn’t suffered thanks to the power efficient A7 CPU and built-in 32.4 watt hour rechargeable lithium-polymer battery.  This provides for up to 10 hours of usage even when the WiFi is active and a mix of tasks are being used including video streaming, HD playback, iWork and email, surfing the Internet, playing music and other tasks.

The WiFi-only 16GB model starts at $499 and $629 for the LTE model.  You can also upgrade in storage capacity and price with the highest model offering 128GB of storage.

What’s the Performance like Compared to the Previous Generation iPad?
The iPad 4 isn’t exactly a slow performing device however, the iPad Air is even faster which makes gaming applications and other multimedia extremely responsive.  The addition of the A7 chip and M7 coprocessor offers powerful performance which sets the iPad 4 apart from its predecessors and makes it the iPhone 5S’s equal due to the 64-bit architecture.

In terms of power, initially you will not experience the full benefit of the 64-bit architecture until app developers design more apps which take advantage of the full potential of 64-bit technology.  The rule applies to the M7 motion coprocessor however, both technologies prepare the iPad for the future generation of apps.  Regardless the iPad Air still renders videos much faster than the iPad 4 and provides speedy performance without any hint of lag time.

Snugg iPad Air case Accessories.

No doubt, there will soon be an extensive range of updated accessories available for the iPad Air from 1st and 3rd party vendors.  One of the cases I have been most impressed with is the Snugg iPad Air case cover and flip stand. The manufacturing quality is very good and the aesthetics are perfect for business users. The stand is also very sturdy. For $29.99, it is exceptional value for money. See the official Snugg website for more information.

Conclusion.

Without a doubt, the iPad Air is one of the best looking and functional tablet PCs on the market thanks to the new changes in the design and the reduction in weight.  So, if it is portability and ease of use you are seeking, the iPad Air is a great option.

Speedy performance is another plus with the new iPad Air with web speeds which can be potentially faster than the typical home broadband connection.  Access to more than 30 free apps many of which were originally offered at a cost is a real plus, in addition to the 64-bit processor which will handle anything you send its way.

So, is the iPad Air worth the upgrade? Well, this depends on your individual needs.  If you currently use a device without a Retina display then it is definitely worth upgrading.  If you conduct a lot of business on FaceTime or Skype, then the HD upgrade is definitely worth your consideration.  If it is high productivity you seek, the iPad Air cannot be beat in terms of performance.  However, as with anything, the model you choose will depend upon your budget and the features you decide you cannot live without.

Surface Pro 2

The Microsoft Surface 2 has many features which were included in the initial Surface tablets last year, only the device is now more refined with new improvements.

Microsoft Surface 2 is a second generation Windows tablet which offers a series of improvements over previous first generation Surface devices plus, a new look to the device casing.  The Surface 2 is not to be confused with the Surface Pro 2.  It is also important to mention Microsoft dropped the RT from the first generation Surface name with the release of the Surface 2.

The Surface 2 runs on Windows 8.1 and is equipped with more than 100,000 Metro Live Tile apps which is up from just a few hundred offered at the release of the first generation Surface last year. You also have access to the Windows desktop with a convenient row of shortcuts located at the bottom part of the screen which include Internet Explorer, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Microsoft Outlook which is newly added due to customer demand.

What Are the Specifications?

The Surface 2 is a 10.6″ tablet with a full HD 1920 x 1080 display that provides wide viewing angles and excellent contrast.  The screen has also been color-tuned for improved accuracy and contrast which is an improvement over first generation devices.

The Surface 2 is also a decent device when it comes to playing games and accessing multimedia thanks to a NVIDIA Tegra 4 T40 quad-core processor which runs at 1.7GHz with 2GB of RAM.  This is also a significant improvement for business users who wish to use the Surface Pro 2 for multitasking.

There are two speakers (one on each side) with Dolby audio sound which provides decent output. Located on the side of the device is also a headphone jack, microphone, and volume controls in addition to a MicroSD card slot which can handle up to 64GB of storage space.

A charging connector on the side of the device provides for easy battery charging.  Next to the port is a USB 3.0 port and MicroHDMI port with the power button discreetly located on the top of the device.

On the back of the device is a 5 megapixel camera with a 3.5 megapixel camera located in the front.  This is an interesting feature on the Surface 2 since it is a better quality camera than what is offered on the Surface Pro 2.

You can easily access the camera controls by swiping to reveal the exposure and timer controls, and switches for front and rear cameras.  You can also perform spot adjustments, access panorama mode, and switch between still shots and video.  To access the still shots and video, you simply swipe to the right to playback the video or use a pinching motion to view specific areas of the still shots.

The lithium ion battery is sealed inside of the Surface 2 similar to previous versions and offers up to 10 hours of battery life. Other reviews have mentioned the battery life amounts to approximately 8 hours with WiFi use, video viewing, Office application use, Skype, and other application usage.  You also get the same compact charger with the slide in prongs and the pogo style metal connector included in first generation Surface tablets.

Surface Pro 2 rearWhat about Software?

In terms of the software experience, the Surface 2 runs on Windows 8.1 which is the updated version of Windows 8 that offers better display scaling on a 10.6″ high resolution screen.  Plus, there are some new features such as the partial return of the Start menu where you can view all of the Live Tiles.  Then a simple swipe up reveals All Programs which displays a broad range of apps.  To exit this window, you simply use the Home button plus, you can assign a Live Tile to easily return to the desktop.

The Surface 2 also runs on the full desktop version of Internet Explorer which is a change from the first generation devices. To split the screen, it is as easy as dragging a tab over to the other side of the screen.  You can also change the balance between the two screens.  This makes multitasking easier since you can view more than one application on the split screen simultaneously.

The Start menu has returned due to customer demand and is not exactly like the traditional Start menu in previous versions of Windows.  Instead, you tap it once and it takes you to the Start menu screen which displays Live Tiles.  When you press and hold the Start button, you get a popup menu which provides access to Programs and Features, Mobility Center, Power Options, Event Viewer, System Device Manager, Run Command Prompt, Disk Manager, Task Manager, and all of the other features which are familiar to users of previous Windows versions.  To search the device, all you need to do is hit the Windows key and then the Q key to easily pull up the Search function.

You also have access to SkyDrive via Office 2013 with 200GB of storage space plus, a year of Skype unlimited for calling landlines and Skype hotspots.  You also have access to Microsoft Outlook which was previously missing and a primary customer complaint for past Surface devices.

What about the Surface 2 Aesthetics?keyboard

In terms of appearance, the Surface Pro 2 has gotten slightly thinner and a little lighter. The Surface 2 tablet is designed with a sturdy magnesium alloy casing in a silver color. It is still fairly thin at 0.35 inches and weighs in at about 1.4 pounds.

There is also a new sculpted notch which makes opening the back kickstand a lot easier. The kickstand now includes both a 25 degree and 40 degree angle and easily adjusts to each angle with a solid click to tell you it is firmly in place.

Just like the first generation Surface devices, you have a choice between the Touch Cover which is a fabric keyboard priced at $120 and the Type Cover which is $130.  The Touch Cover is the fabric cover keyboard which does not have the traditional keys that click. Both covers are now backlit so you should make sure you choose the Type Cover 2 or the Touch Cover 2 to ensure you get the backlighting feature.  The backlighting is fully adjustable via a button located on the top row of the keyboard.

The Touch Cover is also much improved in terms of sensitivity which provides for easier touch typing.  There are also sensors which provide for additional activities, as well as shortcut keys which allow you to easily access multimedia and other functions as well as a touch pad.

The Touch Cover has a very conventional layout and is quite thin weighing in at just 6.8 ounces.  It easily connects to the strong magnetic connector which provides a solid click when the keyboard is attached.  The Touch Cover is also designed to be more rigid which gives it greater durability.  The bottom of the keyboard is made with a matte type of vinyl material which makes it easier to clean than the previous Surface Touch Cover.

When you separate the tablet from the keyboard it still has the same strong magnetic clip as previous Surface 2 devices. When the Touch Cover is attached, you can also fold it back and it automatically senses when you are using the device with the keyboard folded behind it.  This prevents the keyboard from responding when you don’t want it to.  When you fold it back over the front of the device, it acts as a case which protects the Surface 2 screen.

The attachable keyboard is not a requirement however, it enhances productivity.  There is also Bluetooth 4.0 which allows you to use a Bluetooth keyboard or a standard USB 3.0 keyboard.

Surface RT vs. Surface 2: What are the main differences between the two generations?

The Surface 2 second generation of Microsoft devices offers many improvements and updates from the first generation.  Here are some of the primary differences between the two generations.

  • Windows 8.1:  The Surface 2 offers the upgraded version of Windows 8 which is Windows 8.1.
  • Faster Performance:  Thanks to the NVIDIA Tegra 4 Quad-Core Central Processing Unit, the Surface 2 offers faster performance when accessing apps and multitasking.  This is an improvement over the NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor which was included in the first generation of Surface tablets.
  • More Apps:  Where there was only a few hundred apps when the first generation Surface was introduced, there is now more than 100,000 apps available for use with the Surface 2.
  • Screen Resolution:  The first generation Surface offered a screen resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels.  The Surface 2 tablet is equipped with a screen resolution of 1920 x 800 pixels and is color-tuned for greater accuracy and contrast.
  • Dimensions:  The Surface 2 tablet offers larger dimensions of 10.81 x 6.79 x 0.35 inches as opposed to the dimensions of 7 x 11 x 0.37 inches for the Surface RT.

What are the Advantages of Purchasing a Surface 2?

If you are a business user or someone that requires multitasking capability, the Surface 2 tablet is designed with this purpose in mind.  At the same token, the Surface 2 also makes for a decent gaming and multimedia device thanks to the faster Central Processing Unit (CPU).  Other advantages of purchasing the Surface 2 include:

  • Choice of Keyboards:  The Surface 2 enhances multitasking with a choice of two different keyboards which securely attach to the device and act as a screen protector when you fold the keyboard over the device.
  • Durability:  The alloy casing lends itself to durability which provides extra protection for multitaskers on the go.
  • Affordability:  The Surface 2 is relatively affordable without skimping on the essential features which are necessary for multitasking.  If you choose the 32GB version, the generous MicroSD slot can add up to 64GB of additional storage space.
  • Expansion Slots and Ports:  The variety of expansion slots and ports increase the versatility for business users on the go and make computer tasks easier without having to switch to a full-sized PC.

Apps: What are the Best Apps for the Surface 2?

With over 100,000 apps to choose from in the Windows Store, the best apps available for the Surface 2 tablet will depend upon the purpose for which you are using the device. However, here are a few of the best apps for the Surface 2 tablet.

Metro Commander

If you are purchasing the Surface 2 for multitasking, the Metro Commander app offers a dual-pane interface which makes managing files and folders a snap.  Metro Commander provides you with easy access to the standard productivity features such as View, Copy, Rename, New Folder, and other functions you commonly use for managing files and folders. Download the app here

Multimedia 8

If you are used to Windows Media Centre, the Windows Store offers an interesting alternative known as Multimedia 8 which makes it easy to browse multimedia and access files on a media server or the Internet.  There is also a broad range of additional features including 3D video support, video conversion apps, playlist creation, subtitle support, and DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) media streaming. Download the app here

WinZip

If you are using the Surface 2 for business, the WinZip app allows you to reduce the size of files and folders to make management and transmission easier.  The app also provides a way to open other types of compressed files such as RAR, 7z, and other compressed formats. Download the app here

Kindle and Kobo

Both the Kindle and Kobo apps provide access to bookstores which offer an impressive variety of book titles including the newest releases, best sellers, editor picks, and more.  Both apps are available in the Windows Store to enable you to download the app which correlates with your favorite eBook reader.

Fresh Paint

The Fresh Paint app is a step up from the old traditional Microsoft Paint application in previous versions of Windows.  This is an ideal app for kids as well as adults and provides realistic features which offer an authentic painting experience that allows you to convert your photos into a professionally finished oil painting. Download the app here

Microsoft Surface 2 Pricing

The price for the Microsoft Surface tablet starts at $359.00 for the 32GB model and $439.00 for the 64GB model, depending upon where you purchase the device. This actually is a price reduction of about $30.00 over the previous new price.

Additionally, Microsoft has mentioned the included Office applications and the operating system itself occupies a percentage of the storage space.  This leaves about 15GB available on the 32GB version and about 34GB available on the 64GB version. If you are planning on storing your multimedia, you may be more interested in the 64GB model but keep in mind, there is an SD card slot which adds to the storage space for both versions of the Surface 2.

Final Verdict

In terms of hardware, the Microsoft Surface 2 is built for durability and versatility with the capability to use it at as combination tablet PC and laptop.  The much improved screen resolution, sturdy kickstand feature with choice of positions, longer battery life, and increased software options really add up to a nice tablet which is both functional and great looking.

Aside from the continued lack of support for apps, the hardware somewhat makes up for the shortcomings.  Overall, the Surface 2 is designed for multitasking and can be very useful in the business environment.

Windows 8.1 logo

The release of the Windows 8 operating system marked Microsoft’s initial introduction into the modern computing market. Windows 8.1 promises end users the small changes can make a big difference.

Windows 8.1 is Microsoft’s first official update for its newly implemented Windows 8 operating system which moved Microsoft into the new generation of mobile computing. Windows 8 addresses both PC and mobile device users by providing both a traditional PC desktop environment and a new touchscreen capable mobile environment.

The newly updated version of Windows 8.1 has not deviated from the Windows 8 dual capability and usability.  However, Windows 8.1 is equipped with much anticipated changes which help to increase functionality in addition to making the operating system more user friendly.

When using Windows 8, the transitions for PC and mobile users between the Metro apps and a PC desktop were often frustrating and difficult to configure. The updates in Windows 8.1 reduce the complexities of these transitions in addition to providing more user control over various functions.

What’s New in Windows 8.1?

Microsoft has made a number of small changes to its initial update of Windows 8, in addition to a few larger and more noticeable changes.

If you already have Windows 8 installed, performing an upgrade to Windows 8.1 is quite easy since the app is clearly visible on the initial page of the Windows Store.  There is also no need to reinstall desktop applications or files and folders.  Instead, everything is accessible in the form of icons which are pinned to the taskbar.

For Windows 7 users, it is necessary to first install Windows 8 and then perform the upgrade to Windows 8.1.  Depending upon what you currently have installed, the upgrade to Windows 8.1 may present some difficulties. However, once you have officially upgraded to Windows 8.1, any further upgrades become easier to implement.

That said let’s take a look at what’s new in Windows 8.1.

Windows 8.1 Smartscreen

Start Screen

One of the larger and more noticeable changes in Windows 8.1 is the Start Screen.  There is now a larger selection of tile sizes which enhance the capability to customize the interface.  The tiles are still offered in different sizes, and you can also select the size according to width, which offers more customisation options.

There is also a new customisation modewhich prevents you from inadvertently relocating, resizing, or deleting a tile. This makes it more error-proof when you swipe the screen or use your mouse.  The increased tile size selection and tile customisation is ideal for meeting the preferences of a wide variety of users.

The Start Screen also offers a broader selection of backgrounds which also include animations.  There is also the capability to select the same background for both the Start screen and the desktop to create an easier transition between the two interfaces.

Apps

The Apps screen is very similar to the Apps screen in Windows 8 except with a few minor changes which make working with apps easier.  Instead of trying to wade through the conglomeration of apps on the screen, Windows 8.1 offers an easier way to find what you are looking for with a down arrow which indicates content is there whenever you move the mouse. Plus, they have added the capability to organize apps according to frequently used, name, or the date you installed the app.  This is a small change which makes a big difference for many when it comes to finding what you need.

Additionally, apps are no longer restricted to a 30:70 split when you are using more than one app simultaneously.  How many apps can be viewed on the screen at once depends upon the app, since some are scalable in pixels where others are scalable using expanded clicks or solely capable of the 30:70 rule.  Regardless, you are not limited to a 30:70 split with the capability to split to 60:40 or 50:50.

Lock Screen

The Lock Screen for Windows 8.1 features enhanced customisation where you can add an entire slideshow as opposed to a single image as in Windows 8.  It also offers a “slide to power off” function which operates directly from the Lock Screen.  This is ideal for users that desire convenience when shutting down their device and the capability to personalize the Lock Screen.

New User Interface

Although Windows 8 is designed with both PC and mobile users in mind, one of the main complaints is that the mobile interface is rather limited in functionality.  Microsoft has fixed some of these issues by designing a more complete Settings interface which makes the frequently used settings readily available, as opposed to being required to revert back to the Control Panel.

The new UI in Windows 8.1 also provides an improved Help app which provides a series of tips in the form of a popup which walks you through the steps. The Help app is conveniently categorized to help you with various functions including Start and Apps, Get Around, Basic Actions, Your Account and Files, Settings, and What’s New. The app is designed with large icons which also is beneficial to the visually impaired.

Additionally, there is an automatic app update feature which runs in the background and automatically updates the Help app as well as other apps on the interface.  This ensures you always have the latest version of the app without having to remember to update each one individually.

Windows 8.1 Smart SearchSmart Search

The Smart Search feature in Windows 8.1 is one of the more significant changes Microsoft added to the upgrade.  It offers updated functions from the original Search function in Windows 8 which allows you to filter a search query for settings, apps, or files.  With the original Search, you could redirect the search to other compatible apps, in addition to changing the target of the search query to include files or settings.   The end result was inaccurate searches which did not produce what you were looking for.

Instead of a centralized search function, the Search function in Windows 8.1 is app-based plus, there is a new Bing-based search function which provides you with a way to search both your device and the web.

The Bing-based search function can be disabled if you prefer however, it does offer more accurate search results plus, you can set the filters for targeted searches of images, web apps, settings, and files.

Libraries

The Libraries function in Windows 8.1 has changed and is no longer displayed automatically in Windows Explorer.  Instead, the Libraries feature is hidden in Explorer and is visible in the File Picker when you use the apps for Windows Store.  Despite the fact that Libraries is hidden in Explorer, you still must add them after you use Windows Store apps.

Libraries can be added to Windows Explorer by right clicking on the folders in Explorer.  When the drop down menu appears, you can select the option to add them to Explorer. If you want to work with folders in Explorer, it is necessary to re-activate them in the navigation pane.  This feature may work for experienced users but can bewilder the novice user until you get used to it.

Desktop

Windows 8.1 did not leave desktop users behind as the updated system places the Start button back in its original location on the left hand side of the taskbar. Additionally, users that are intimidated by or generally dislike Metro features, can disable some of the features in part or in full.  These are features such as the Charms, Switcher, and the Start Screen which allows you to revert back to the traditional menu style setting when you click on the Start button.

Sky Drive Logo

SkyDrive

SkyDrive is Microsoft’s cloud service which allows you to access files and folders on multiple devices.  Microsoft upgraded the SkyDrive service in Windows 8.1 with enhanced settings which allow you to sync Start Screen layouts and Metro tiles, as well as access Document Sync which is built-in to the operating system.

Additionally, the separate mobile app for SkyDrive is still included with a few new updates.  First, you can use the app to navigate SkyDrive as well as your local device which creates a functionality similar to an Explorer app. Second, using the built-in document sync app, you can easily mark files and folders for use outside of SkyDrive or offline.

The new SkyDrive is different from the SkyDrive service in Windows 8 which only provided a limited number of sync settings with the requirement to install a desktop application in order to successfully sync files and folders.  This makes the new SkyDrive service ideal for mobile workers and individuals who like to remain mobile without having to remember to bring an external storage device.

Internet explorer 11

Internet Explorer 11

Windows 8.1 comes equipped with Internet Explorer which provides a faster browsing experience and better integration with apps.  Even when you have multiple tabs open, Internet Explorer is capable of opening pages fast and rendering complex web content.

The enhanced performance is the result of an accelerated rendering engine which provides faster performance than previous desktop versions with the capability to have up to 100 tabs open at once without sacrificing performance.  You can also swipe to a previous page faster and switch tabs in less time than previous version of IE.

Internet Explorer also makes greater use of the app bar which displays three dots that indicate there is more content.  When you tap on the dots, the app bar opens and displays the URL address bar, in addition to a variety of different tabs which are displayed at the bottom of the screen.  This feature provides for better management of data and information for any type of user.

Windows 8.1 Pros and Cons

Although Windows 8.1 offers many fixes and upgrades, there are always pros and cons to using a new version as in past releases of Windows.  To conclude this evaluation, we will highlight some of the pros and cons users have found when conducting a test run of Windows 8.1.

Pros

  • Fixes and Updates have resolved many of the issues which frustrated users of Windows 8.
  • Boot to Desktop thanks to the return of the Start button, allows the die-hard desktop user to easily access the conventional desktop features.
  • Using Multiple Metro Apps simultaneously is more practical thanks to the enhanced options which make working with apps easier.  No longer are you limited to 30:70-compatible apps.
  • Xbox Sharing provides for a user-friendly sharing of song list websites to Xbox Music.  Once you share the lists through Xbox, it automatically generates a playlist which is readily available at your fingertips.
  • Improved Search Functions:  The capability to search the Internet from your desktop and target app-based searches is a definite improvement over Windows 8.

Cons

  • The PC Settings Structure in hierarchal form can be confusing and complex to navigate which leaves questions as to where you need to go.
  • The Start Screen is the only way to open apps.  Although the Start button has been restored, some of the functionality has still been omitted.  This means you must return to the Start Screen each time you want to access an app.
  • Metro is rather complex to use for desktop devices since it makes it feel like you should be able to do more things simultaneously.  However, the Boot to Desktop function combined with Start button alleviates frustrations for desktop users.  However, the bottom line is it is obvious that Microsoft has placed most of its efforts into developing Metro for future mobile devices instead of desktops.

Final Verdict

If you already have Windows 8, the step up to Windows 8.1 is worth considering, especially if you have been frustrated by some of the past features in Windows 8 which have been fixed with Windows 8.1.  For those who are resistant to change, Windows 8.1 can be a significant adjustment but one that is worth pursuing since the operating system is here to stay and there is no avoiding it in future versions of Windows.

Manipulate PDF documents.

Say goodbye to third party PDF reader applications; now you can open and edit PDF documents in Word 2013. Simply open a PDF in word to automatically convert it to a word document. Sometimes the formatting can be a bit messy, but most of the time it is fine. It depends on the complexity of the document.

Leverage improved object placement features.

Object placement is much improved in Word 2013. A single click on an object such as an image will reveal a layout options tab in the top right hand corner (see image below). Simply click on the tab to expand the familiar layout options. In addition, a resizing frame will also appear around the edge of the object.

Apps provide a great way to expand on the existing functionality incorporated into word. If you are trying to stay on budget and cannot afford a full-featured tablet, the Asus Memo Pad HD7 tablet is worth taking a look.  The Asus Memo Pad HD7 is very affordable, with performance that exceeds a bargain basement device.  Because of the low price, you may tend to question the performance, quality of the screen, or the construction. but the Memo Pad has left many tablet PC consumers pleasantly surprised.

First Impressions.

When you first remove the Memo Pad HD7 from the box you are greeted with a 7-inch glass IPS (In-plane switching) panel which is mounted on a surprisingly durable frame with concave backing that provides for a solid grip. The backing is not rubberised however, the design provides for a grip, which is void of any slippery surfaces. The Asus Memo Pad HD7 is 10.9mm in thickness and weighs in at 300 grams.

When you power up the Memo Pad HD7, you are treated to a 7-inch 1230x 800 resolution display with 226 pixels per inch (PPI) which provides for a sharp display with a 16:10 aspect ratio.

On the top of the device is a micro USB port for charging and data transfer and a headphone jack located next to it.  The improved Sonic Master speaker is located on the bottom of the device and is designed with stereo capability which provides adequate playback.

Inside the box, the Asus Memo Pad HD7 is accompanied by a convenient desk stand, USB charger, and an AC adapter with USB input.

Asus Memo Pad HD7 Tablet - side onWhat about Design and Build Quality?

In terms of design and build, the Memo Pad HD7 is rather thick in design and does not offer the very best premium build. However, the casing is quite decent for a device of this price range despite the plastic materials used for construction.  The concave molded plastic as opposed to aluminum offers a nice surface and is built for durability without creaking or flexing when you hold the device in your hand.

The Memo Pad HD7 design and build is very simple with only the connection ports interrupting the sleek design.  The rear facing camera protrudes slightly from the back of the device but the volume rocker button and the power switch are well integrated with the device design.

In terms of overall design and construction, the Asus Memo Pad HD7really does not feel like a budget tablet PC when you hold it in your hand.  Instead, it feels like an upper end tablet and even comes in an array of colors.

What Are the Specifications?

Under the hood the Asus Memo Pad HD7 is running the ARMv7 Quad Core Processor at a speed of1.2 GHz.  This makes for impressive performance quality for a tablet PC in this price range. The quad core processing speed makes gaming applications and multitasking seamless with no glitches when it comes to streaming media.  There is also 1GB of Random Access memory (RAM) which contributes to speedy performance.

When it comes to storage, the Asus Memo Pad HD7 is offered in two different versions which include the 8GB model and the 16GB model.  Both versions offer a MicroSD card slot which is capable of handling an additional 32GB of storage space.

Additionally, there are extra features which include a GPS/ G-Censor, MIRACAST connectivity which is the WiFi display specification for streaming media, and Bluetooth 4.0.  The Asus Memo Pad HD7 runs on the Android Jellybean 4.2.1 operating system

There is a front and back facing camera for using Face Time or for taking photographs. The back camera is 5 megapixels with 1080p video capability with a front facing camera of 1.2 megapixels.  The 8GB version of the Memo Pad HD7 offers a 2 megapixel back facing camera as opposed to the 5 megapixel camera in the 16GB model.  On the left hand side is a MicroSD card slot to expand the 16GB capacity with power and volume rocker buttons located on the right hand side.

The 7-inch 1230x 800 resolution display with 226 pixels per inch (PPI) provides for quality screen viewing despite the fact that the display is lacking in black lighting and contrast to some degree. Otherwise, for a device in this price range, the display proves to be high quality and functional.

The battery life is quite impressive when compared to other similar devices.  The battery included in the Memo Pad HD7 offers up to 10 hours of battery life before re-charging is necessary.

Asus Memo Pad HD7 Tablet - coloursWhat about Usability and Software?

The interface is very user friendly and delivers smooth performance. It is quite standard in design with the navigation buttons located at the bottom of the screen and top swipe function to access notifications which have been merged with all of your quick settings.

The main screen is customisable using Asus apps and includes a power saver and task manager in addition to other productivity apps and software. One thing that really stands out is the Memo Pad HD 7 is relatively free of annoying ‘bloatware’ which is known to be useless and slows device performance.

The Home button has been changed to include easy access to a calendar, calculator, notes, Asus Studio browser, applications, shortcuts, and Google Plus.

There is an extra button on the bottom left hand side which is called Asus Floating Widgets and easily pulls up applications for multitasking.  When you access this feature, the applications appear on a floating ribbon which you can slide across the screen to access frequently used applications.

The touchscreen is not gorilla glass and instead is a high quality glass which is quite responsive when it comes to multitasking, working with apps, and playing games.  Like most tablet PCs, the screen tends to be prone to fingerprints.

The in-depth rear facing camera offers a lot of options and many different camera modes, filters, and resolutions with decreased performance in low light settings.  There is a host of other features on the right hand side which extend the camera capabilities for capturing high quality images.

Performance wise and when using the interface, the Asus Memo Pad HD7 is not the most powerful tablet on the market. However, throughout regular use with browsing the web, playing back videos, interacting with social media, and playing games, the performance is very satisfactory for a tablet in this price range.  It is not the smoothest experience you could have with a touchscreen when opening apps or pressing the Home button, but it is definitely not a deal breaker for the price.

Asus has also designed their own keyboard layout which include all numbers, letters, and punctuations on the same screen.  This is an improvement over having to switch screens to access different typing functions.

Pros and Cons

Overall, there is a lot to like about the Asus Memo Pad HD7 with more pros than cons when you use this device.  However, we will highlight some of the pros and cons to round out the review and help you to make an informed decision.

Pros

  • ARMv7 Quad Core Processor provides high performance and speedy processing power.
  • Overall Attractive Display provides many hours of high quality media streaming and multitasking.
  • Exceptional Camera which provides an impressive variety of options for a device of this size.
  • Customizable Screen provides a way to add Asus apps you use frequently.
  • MicroSD Port is a great addition for extending the storage capabilities.
  • WiFi Connection runs fast and efficiently.
  • GPS does not require WiFi to function properly and, with an app such as Mapdroyd, it functions very well as a GPS unit in your vehicle.
  • Easy Setup only takes a few minutes and steps you through the process.
  • Automatic Updates to new versions of Android OS.

Cons

  • Ambient Light Sensor which automatically senses lighting conditions is absent.
  • Aluminum Casing is replaced with plastic casing.
  • Random Access Memory (RAM) is limited at 1GB
  • HDMI connectivity is not included.

Final Verdict

When compared to other tablet PCs in this price range, the Asus Memo Pad HD7 offers a lot in terms of functionality, design, build, and performance.  The battery life really surpasses other rival devices in this price range. Plus, the Memo Pad HD7 offers additional features such as the GPS and rear facing camera which is omitted on other devices in this category.  Overall, a very nice tablet PC for the price if you are unable to afford a more expensive tablet or want a second tablet for portability and convenience.

S24A850DW 24" Monitor

The Samsung SyncMaster S24A850DW 24″ LED color monitor is ideal for individuals and businesses that desire high performance and increased productivity.

For PC users that are looking for a monitor which is designed for multitasking and highly productive working environments, the Samsung SyncMaster S24A850DW LED color monitor is worthy of consideration.  Designed for demanding working conditions, the Samsung S24A850DW delivers high performance with low power consumption while offering the latest technologies which significantly enhance efficiency and productivity.

At first glance, the next generation capabilities of the SyncMaster S24A850DW monitor are deceptive due to its slim design.  However, when you take a look under the hood, this model of the Samsung monitor is packed with features and functions which help to streamline work processes with increased efficiency and productivity.  Here is a hands on product review of the Samsung SyncMaster S24A850DW LED color monitor.

Technical Specifications and Warranty

When you first look at the Samsung S24A850DW, the slim design is very appealing with product dimensions of 1.6 x 22 x 14.7 inches and a progressive resolution of 1920 x 1200.  This type of screen resolution is designed with sequential scan lines which in conjunction with the Samsung LED PLS technology, delivers impressive images and accurate color.  Other specifications which distinguish the Samsung S24A850DW from other monitors on the market include:

  • Image Response Time:  Thanks to the 5ms GTG response time, the S24A850DW delivers high resolution images without the crystalline effect and color shift which makes extended use hard on the eyes.
  • Improved Viewing Angles:  The Samsung LED PLS (Plane to Line Switching) technology makes it possible to view the monitor from wider angles minus any difficulty with dark spots and shadowing.  The technology also provides support for 16.7 million colors with a contrast ratio of 3000:1.
  • Superior Connectivity:  The Samsung S24A850DW is equipped with four USB 3.0 ports, VGA port, DVI-D, and DisplayPort which provides enhanced functionality and diversified connectivity.  When the DisplayPort and DVI-D are used together, this allows the monitor to be connected to two different devices simultaneously.
  • Backlight Technology:  Viewing the S24A850DW in different lighting environments is never an issue with the LED backlight technology and lighting sensors which adjust to surroundings.
  • Warranty:  The Samsung S24A850DW offers a warranty policy of up to three years for both parts and labor.

Other specifications worth noting are the additional features which are offered including a built-in Off Timer which automatically powers off the monitor after a period of inactivity, the Image Size Adjustment feature which allows you to change image sizes for easier viewing, and the Multi-screen software which allows you to work from more than one monitor or multiple screens which are divided on a single monitor.

Ergonomics

Since the Samsung SyncMaster S24A850DW is designed for high productivity working conditions, the ergonomic features which are built-in help to significantly reduce fatigue.  The advanced ergonomics include the ability to raise or lower the monitor for increased viewing comfort.

The S24A850DW monitor is also equipped with a swivel tilt mechanism which allows you to customize monitor adjustments to the working environment.  The swivel feature also allows you to adjust the monitor for horizontal or vertical viewing similar to when you change the angle of your mobile phone to accommodate a different viewing experience.

The Samsung S24A850DW is also designed to mount on a wall for increased work space and improved viewing.  Thanks to the thin design and elegant style, the S24A850DW occupies very little wall space and looks great in any type of working environment.

Power Consumption

The Samsung S24A850DW is quite miserly when it comes to power consumption at 64 watts when the monitor is in full operation.  The S24A850DW also utilizes a Standby/Sleep mode which only uses 0.5 watts of power and operates at very low heat levels.

Samsung right angle

The Samsung S24A850DW has been rated GOLD by the EPEAT (Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool) which is the global registry for green electronics which helps consumers to make environmentally friendly product choices. An EPEAT rating is based on the environmental impact during the entire product lifecycle.  When an EPEAT rating is issued, it means that the product exceeds the standard green criteria by 75 percent or more.

Who Uses the Samsung SyncMaster S24A850DW Monitor?

The Samsung S24A850DW monitor is designed for high productivity working environments such as educational institutions, manufacturing organizations, professional and financial service industries, and other demanding work environments.  This means the monitor is geared toward professional workers rather than the consumer market.

However, the Samsung S24A850DW can also be used by individuals who seek the latest technologies for enhanced productivity.  Although this may not include casual users, the Samsung S24A850DW can be used in a home office environment for a business owner that prefers the latest innovations which help to increase efficiency and productivity.

What about Cost?

Without a doubt the Samsung SyncMaster S24A850DW is a higher end monitor with a price tag that exceeds the conventional monitors on the market.  Depending upon where you purchase the monitor, prices can range anywhere from $360.00 to $400.00.  However, when you factor in the lower power consumption and high productivity functions coupled with the green EPEAT rating, the monitor may prove to be a viable alternative to the lower cost conventional monitors on the market.

Where to Buy the Samsung S24A850DWSyncmaster-Right-Angle

The Samsung S24A850DW can purchased from a variety of retailers in both the online and offline environments.  This provides a wide array of choices when it comes to shopping around for the best price.

One of the popular retailers that offer the Samsung S24A850DW is Amazon.co.uk where you can purchase the monitor in the $525 price range.  In addition to the Samsung warranty, purchasers also have access to Amazon’s return policy and money back guarantee.

Retailers such as Best Buy and Costco also offer the Samsung S24A850DW monitor in the $500-$600 price range.  Additionally, the monitor is offered on Overstock.com in the ballpark of a $499 to $550 price range.

Samsung S24A850DW Pros and Cons

In most cases, the reviews online have indicated 4.5 to 5 star ratings for the Samsung S24A850DW monitor.  However, there are pros and cons just like any other monitor on the market.

Pros

  • The slim build and elegant design together with the ergonomic versatility makes for an ideal device for productivity and style.
  • Latest display technologies offer an unparalleled viewing experience.
  • Low heat and power consumption.
  • Excellent viewing angles from a wide distance.
  • Multiple monitor and device connectivity.
  • Four USB 3.0 ports provide connection options for the latest devices.
  • GOLD rating by EPEAT.
  • Adjustable height, tilt, and pivot mechanisms.
  • Light sensor and automatic brightness adjustment.
  • Competitive price for access to high productivity functions.

Cons

  • Illumination uniformity issues can sometimes result in uneven lighting and shadows.
  • Large number of adjustment modes and settings which are largely unnecessary.
  • Difficult adjustment of standard glow-effect to avoid the blue-violet color display.
  • Port orientation can make connectivity difficult.
  • Cable bundles for DVI-D and DisplayPort are not included.
  • Monitor cannot be adjusted to full height.

Conclusion

The Samsung SyncMaster S24A850DW LED monitor is probably the most interesting Samsung product to date.  It represents a significant step forward in monitor technology and is designed to deliver what the end user has been looking for over a long period of time.

For users who want more than a conventional monitor and organizations who want to increase productivity, the Samsung S24A850DW is the perfect choice.  However, for casual users that use their PC simply to check email or occasionally browse the Internet, the Samsung S24A850DW may be too over the top where a lower priced monitor would suffice.

Whether or not the Samsung S24A850DW is right for the end user really depends upon functionality and productivity needs which vary according to the work environment and industry-specific requirements.

Apple IOS 7 Apple has recently launched iOS 7, the most significant IOS update since the introduction of the iPhone. We think you will enjoy the substantial improvements featured in this revision of IOS, including a much improved user interface and greater functionality.

Initial thoughts.

The minute you power up your iPhone, you will immediately notice new elements on the top of the status panel. You can begin navigating the bright interface, which utilizes the entire screen. Pull down menus allow you to quickly access the Control Center and Passcode screen which allows you to unlock the device.

Once you unlock the device, the icons appear by flowing into the screen as opposed to being static like the previous versions of iOS.  Pull down the notification panel and you will see a completely different design which complements the sharp fonts enhanced with a Retina Display.

On the main interface, you can access the Today screen by tapping the icon to access the day’s events.  Tap on the information icon and you have access to news, events, and other applications.  You can also quickly access all notifications by tapping the icon to view email messages, phone calls, and events you have missed.

New Features

The new features included in iOS 7 are all about reducing complexities and streamlining task processes.  Here are few of the key features along with a few advantages and drawbacks.

Apple IOS 7 ScreenshotGraphical User Interface

Typically, changes to the design of any Apple GUI are minimal, and ery much a case of evolution than revolution. IOS 7 bucks this trend in a big way…

The entire GUI has received a makeover, with the traditional razor sharp icons being replaced with new pastel coloured revisions that are much easier on the eye.

The user interface offers a 3D effect with animation you can see when you move your phone around.  The 3D image moves in the background and integrates well the User Interface icons.  For example, when using the buttons on the Lock screen, you will see the same color as your wallpaper appear as you tap each button, a nice touch. The same effect applies to the Call application when you type in a phone number.

Control Center

The Control Center pulls up from the bottom of the screen.  It allows you to easily toggle an array of features including Airplane Mode, WiFi, Bluetooth, Screen Brightness, and Lock Rotation. You can also access the music control on this interface with a single tap as double tapping is no longer required.

You can also select whom you want to AirDrop with and which device you want to share with using AirPlay.  On the bottom of the Control Center screen, you have toggles for quick access to a flashlight, clock, calculator, and quick launch for the camera.

Messages Application

The messages application screen has been completely redesigned with a new layout and look. There are bubbles around the messages with a new keyboard located at the bottom of the screen, which is slightly easier to use then the previous version.

You can also attach photos and videos as in the previous iOS.  The text in your messages is animated when sent and flows out of the text box into the bubble.  When you press down on one of the messages, it provides you with a way to Copy or tap on the More icon which allows you to select multiple messages to be sent simultaneously.

When you swipe individual messages, you receive a newer design of the Delete button and, if you decide not to delete the message, you will see a new icon on the left hand side.  The iconic red and white color theme is used throughout the Messages application. When you compose a new message you can also view the keyboard in horizontal format.

Notifications

Notifications can be accessed from the Message app in addition to the Notifications Center.  The notifications are presented on a black background, which you can tap on to access your references just as you would in iOS 6.  Instead of tapping the Back icon, you can now use a swiping motion to revert to previous notifications.  The animations are very smooth with no lag time when you are swiping through messages.

The same process applies to email except when you swipe through an email conversation, you have access to a Delete button as well as a More button which allows you to Reply, Forward, Mark as Read, Move to Junk, or Move Message.

Call Application

Initiating a call presents you with a completely clean interface.  Some of the drawbacks of the new Call application are the Speakerphone icon, which makes it difficult to see when the Speaker has been selected.  The icons in the new Call applications are a little more difficult to tap on due to size and orientation and the colors are less visible which makes it difficult to tell whether your phone is on Speaker or Mute.  This is easy to overlook as opposed to the Call application in iOS 6.

The information button on the right is also difficult to tap and requires precision.  However, once you can access it you can swipe to easily block a phone number.  You can do this in the Messages application as well.  The caller on the other end who has been blocked simply receives a busy tone.

The Contacts list is basically the same with the navigation on the right as in the previous iOS 6.  You can also access your favorites as well as your voicemail in countries with carriers where visual voicemail is available.

Multitasking

The multitasking Panel has also become a lot easier, which makes switching between apps a lot easier and more efficient.  Along with the card for each app, there is also an icon, which is displayed below it for easy app identification.  If you are a developer, you can easily multitask thanks to the new API which provides for multitasking in the background.

Folders

When you access the folders feature, the design also displays the back wallpaper very clearly and you can have multiple icons within a folder.  For example, if you have a social folder you can have several pages of apps stored in that folder.

AirDrop

AirDrop is a new feature, which allows you to easily share content with other users.  This feature integrates with your list of contacts, allowing you to easily select the people you wish to share with.

Photos

The photo app launches with a single tap, displaying icons at the bottom of the screen.  When you tap on the Photos icon, you can easily view your Moments by date and by location so you can easily search and find specific photos.

You can also share photos via WiFi and Bluetooth through AirDrop, Mail, iCloud, Twitter, and Facebook.  On the bottom of the screen, you can access additional functions including Copy, Use as Slideshow, Transfer with AirPlay, Assign to Contact, Use as Wallpaper, or Print.

Camera

The camera app has been completely redesigned and displays a flattering design. Scrolling or simply swiping left or right will allow you to navigate through the menu.  For example, swipe left for video, swipe right for photo and then tap on the HDR icon to take a photo in High Dynamic Range.  Swipe further to the right and you get Square, which is the new design one-by-one photographs you use on Instagram.  Tap on the bottom right icon and you get Filters, which allow you to add effects to your images.

Calendar

The calendar is also has the well-known red and white color theme.  When the main calendar month is displayed, you can tap on a date to access an appointment list for the day.  On the bottom of the screen, there is a convenient Today button as well as an Inbox button for messages and invitations you have replied to or which require a reply.

Navigation

Under the Navigation application, the Maps feature has been completely redesigned with images that appear sharper for those using iOS Maps plus, you still have access to Google maps.  The flags tell you when something new has occurred in a specific location.  The design element is also prevalent within the Maps app with access to Standard, Hybrid, or Satellite view and the ability to Drop a Pin, Print the Map, Report a Problem, or Show Traffic.

The Share button included in the Navigation app allows you to share your location via AirDrop in the form of a Message, Mail, Twitter, or Facebook and you can also add your location as a Bookmark.

The Video feature in the Navigation app has a few changes.  When you select a video it is more translucent and blends in better with the iOS design element.  Tapping on the knobs is slightly more difficult and requires more precision than iOS 6.  There is also an AirPlay button which allows you to share the video with other devices.

Weather

The weather application has been completely redesigned with easy access to humidity, chance of rain, wind direction, and what the temperature feels like.  You can easily scroll through various weather locations, which shows cloud animations of the current weather conditions.

Tapping on the information tab easily loads different cities in an entirely new format where you can access complete weather information and time in a convenient list.

Newsstand

The Newsstand app has been completely changed and no longer offers the wooden book rack setup.  Instead, you have transparent controls, which stack your publications.

When you access the App Store, you get access the same basic design as previous version of iOS plus, there is a new button for Popular Near Me for publications popular in your area.

Settings

All the menu items in the Settings panel are essentially the same except for the ability to access the Control Center.  This allows you to decide whether or not you wish to access the Control Center once the phone is locked.

Music

The music application is basically the same with a few new features.  On the right side you have Playlist of Albums and when you tap on the left icon, you have access to iTunes Videos.  ITunes Radio provides a completely new interface which allows you to select radio stations plus, add radio stations where you can navigate through the songs.  Tapping on the song will provide you with information about the artist and allows you to choose to play more songs like this, never play this song, and add an iTunes Wish List.

Safari

Safari offers a new interface. The minute you begin scrolling up it removes the bars from the top as well as the bottom so everything looks cleaner.  Then you simply tap on the URL to access the bottom bar, which displays browser tabs that allow multiple windows to be opened at once.  Then you simply swipe out to remove a tab.  You can also access your bookmarks, shared links, and reading list by tapping on each tab and share web content via AirDrop.

siri logoSiri

Siri is has returned and is included in iOS 7.  Most of the functions are the same with a new feature that allows you to select a male or female voice.  The voices sound more natural, which enhances user interaction.

Siri is also capable of accessing web searches, Wikipedia, and Twitter searches to enhance its responsiveness.  You can also easily access controls such as Do Not Disturb, Music, and Flight Mode simply by asking Siri.

Reminder

The Reminder application has also been redesigned with more colors added and a clean look.  The list of reminders is easily viewable thanks to colored fonts which allow you to easily scroll through Scheduled, Reminders, My Grocery List, Shopping List, and other reminders you specify.

Reminders also allows you to easily create a new task, select when you want to be reminded of the task, where you want to be reminded.  You can also set a reminder to charge your phone when you leave or when you arrive.  Tap on More and you can set your reminders to Repeat, Priority, Add to List, and enter Notes for each reminder.

Conclusions.

We hope that this information will provide you with a comprehensive review of iOS 7 along with some of the pros and cons of some of the new features.

Overall, iOS 7 offers modern conveniences which address the needs of multi-taskers with intuitive new features which are both refined and robust.  If anything, it is definitely a significant stride toward the next generation of mobile devices.
